IHSAA News Release

March 30, 2011

NEW SECTIONAL ASSIGNMENTS APPROVED FOR 2011-12, 2012-13
The IHSAA Executive Committee has approved the recommendations of the realignment committees responsible for placing member schools into sectional groups in six team sports for the 2011-12 and 2012-13 school years.

Three committees consisting of principals and athletic administrators representing each IHSAA district and class were constructed to realign the sports. The baseball, basketball, softball and volleyball committee along with the soccer committee consisted of 12 individuals while the football committee totaled 15 members.

These committees met during the week of March 14, 2011 and submitted their realignment plans to the Executive Committee for approval on March 25, 2011.

“All three realignment committees were extremely well-prepared and provided valuable input throughout each meeting,” commented Commissioner Bobby Cox. “The conscientious attitudes of the committee members were clearly evident in their deliberations. The locations of schools and their proximity to other schools were given the greatest consideration when forming sectional groupings.  Secondly, a deliberate effort was made to eliminate five and seven team sectionals where possible.  I feel that each group developed an alignment which will serve the membership appropriately and create excitement and interest among our patrons.  The IHSAA staff will now begin the process of identifying member schools that are willing to host these important tournament series events.”

Proposals and tournament formats will be submitted to the IHSAA Executive Committee for approval in June of 2011 for fall sports, October of 2011 for winter sports and February of 2012 for spring sports.

Also, in recent days, a second member school has indicated it will leave the membership at the end of this school year. White’s Jr./Sr. High School in Wabash, has notified Commissioner Bobby Cox of its intention to withdraw from membership following the 2010-11 school year.

With this development, a revised version of the four-class alignment by enrollment has been posted to the IHSAA website and affects the classification of one school. Northeast Dubois, located in Dubois and the smallest 2A school, now becomes a Class A school where it had previously resided. White’s did not play football or soccer so the respective five class and two class alignments for those sports remain unchanged.

The IHSAA had issued a revised four-class alignment in a Feb. 22 release following notification that Holy Cross School in Terre Haute would also withdraw from the Association at the end of the school year.

Finally, Guerin Catholic has opted to play up one class in girls soccer, the only school to do so in any sport. The Noblesville school, originally listed as a Class A school in the new two-class format, will now compete in Class 2A, Sectional 17. The school’s boys soccer team will compete in Class A. IHSAA By-Law, C-2-3c allows any school to play up one or more classes in any sport for the two-year classification period by notifying the Association Office.
