WASHINGTON — Washington connected on a penalty kick just over halfway through the first half and that was enough to stop South, 2-0, in the final game of Washington’s annual tournament Saturday.

The Panthers (2-1) had opened play with a 4-0 win over Northview, getting goals from Chris Post and Scott McClary in the first half, then Stefan Dalecki and Tyler Stonier.

“(Northview) is not a real strong team and we came out relaxed and started off slow,” said South coach Kevin Sparks. “The goals we scored were good goals, well taken shot and built up by the entire team. We had over 30 shots.”

South had its chances against the Hatchets (3-0), who connected once each half.

“It was a very even match the majority of the first half,” Sparks said. “But a ball got through and when Doug (Terrill) came out to make the save, their forward came in at the last second and poked it behind him. Doug caught his foot and tripped him.

“In the second half, we came out strong, but we misjudged a mark and they were able to head a ball in in the first 10 minutes, After that, we picked it up and took it to them. Kelly Dunnigan had a shot that hit off the post. It was a great shot, just unlucky.”
