BOYS' SOCCER
Jones' hat trick rallies South past Jasper

With South trailing 2-1 to Jasper at the half Thursday night, boys’ soccer coach Kevin Sparks told Sterling Jones he wanted another goal from him.

“He said, ‘I’ll get two,’” Sparks said.

And Jones, who had given the Panthers a 1-0 lead in the 4th minute, did just that as South rallied in for a 3-2 win over Jasper.

Chris Post assisted on the first goal and Joey Weibel on the second. The game-winner was on a header off an assist from Drew Barlow.

“He was above the crossbar on the header,” Sparks said. “The guy that jumped with him had no chance.”

A defensive adjustment and simplifying play in the second half made the difference. As did the strong play of goalie Doug Terrill, who had 10 saves.

“He saved us big-time in the first half,” Sparks said. “He saved about three breakaways that Jasper could have easily put away. He was on his game.”

The Panthers (9-4-2) wrap up the regular season Saturday at Castle.

Jasper 2 0 — 2

South (9-4-2) 1 2 — 3

S: Sterling Jones, 3 goals; Chris Post, assist; Joey Weibel, assist; Drew Barlow, assist; Doug Terrill, 10 saves.
